Quality Of Care Delivery In Colorectal Cancer Improved By Educational Initiatives
A study of targeted educational initiatives between the clinical staff at Fox Chase Cancer Center and the hospitals within their Partners program suggest that educational interventions by academic cancer centers can improve quality of care for cancer patients at community hospitals. The study, to be presented at the 2009 Annual Meeting of the American Society of Clinical Oncology, looked specifically at the number of lymph nodes that were surgically removed in colorectal cancer patients at Fox Chase"s partner hospitals and the impact that educational initiatives by clinical staff had on improving the number of nodes removed.

Study Looks At HIV, Risk Behaviors Among Male Clients Of Sex Workers In Tijuana, Mexico
"A large percentage" of U.S. and Mexican men who regularly engage in sexual activity with sex workers in Tijuana, Mexico, do not use condoms and have a history of substance and alcohol use, according to a study published in the online journal AIDS, the Los Angeles Times" blog "L.A. Now" reports. The study, by researchers from Mexico and the University of California-San Diego, surveyed 400 men - both Mexico and U.S. residents - and found that half of the men had unprotected sex with a female sex worker within the last four months. Researchers noted that although Tijuana authorities require that sex workers be registered and tested regularly for HIV, "only about half of [sex workers] have registered or been tested," according to the blog. Thomas Patterson of the UC-San Diego"s department of psychiatry and the Veterans Affairs health center, said the findings indicate a need for an educational campaign targeting men who frequent sex workers (Perry, 7/11).

Despite Some Progress, Key Senators Say August Deadline A Longshot

One day after President Obama told lawmakers to speed up their pace, three key Finance Committee senators expressed doubts about meeting the President"s August deadline for passing a reform proposal, Politico reports. Sen. Kent Conrad, D-N.D., said he doesn"t "see how" his colleagues can confirm the new Supreme Court nominee, Sonia Sotomayor, and pass a health bill in the time left before the August recess. Sen. Olympia Snowe, R-Maine, one of the Republicans being courted to support the bill, called the deadline "overly ambitious," while Sen. Max Baucus, D-Mont., the Finance chairman, expressed some optimism but said, "I"m not going to guarantee that it"s going to happen" (Budoff Brown, 7/14). Despite statements from Senators still working out the "pay-fors" of the Senate bill, the Senate leadership is sticking to the deadline. "Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid, D-Nev., insisted on Monday, "We"re going to get health care done before we leave here," referring to the recess," Fox News reports (7/14). Meanwhile, the other Senate committee, Health, Education, Labor and Pensions, reached a bipartisan compromise on provisions that would attempt to save money by making Americans more health conscious, the Boston Globe reports. "Workers who quit smoking, lose weight, and eat right could have their health insurance premiums cut by as much as half, possibly saving them thousands of dollars per year, under a measure inserted with little notice this week into the Senate healthcare overhaul bill."
