UK Government Supports Moves For Pharma Companies To Communicate Directly With Patients
The UK government would like to allow pharmaceutical companies to provide patients with more information about prescription drugs, according to an article published in Pulse. UK ministers view the European Commission"s proposals positively - these proposals would greatly extend the communication permitted between companies and patients. Currently, European Law limits such communication to patient safety leaflets.

Roche To Offer Developing Countries Discounted Tamiflu
The pharmaceutical company Roche on Wednesday announced a program to help ensure developing countries have access to its antiviral Tamiflu, for "the management of a novel influenza strain defined by the WHO as having significant and current pandemic potential," Reuters reports (Egenter, 7/1). The program will make Tamiflu, which has been shown to be effective against the H1N1 (swine flu) virus, available to developing countries for "half the price normally charged," Dow Jones Newswires/Wall Street Journal reports (Mengewein, 7/1).

Sen. McConnell Says Filibuster Of Supreme Court Nominee Sotomayor Remains Possible
Appearing on CBS" "Face the Nation" on Sunday, Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnel (R-Ky.) said that Senate Republicans have not ruled out a filibuster on the Supreme Court nomination of Judge Sonia Sotomayor, The Hill reports. Although McConnell acknowledged that he has "consistently opposed filibustering judges," he added that the "precedent was established" when Democrats filibustered Miguel Estrada, an appeals court nominee under former President George W. Bush. When asked to clarify his statement, McConnell added, "The Democrats have firmly established that as a precedent, but that doesn"t mean you are going to use it" (Blake, The Hill, 6/14). McConnell also said that it is "way too early to be talking about whether or not anybody opposes this nominee" (Schieffer, "Face the Nation," CBS, 6/14).According to The Hill, McConnell is the first top GOP senator to state that a filibuster is a possibility, as most other Republicans have said only that it is too early to determine if it should be an option. Republicans "face a difficult path" if they choose to filibuster Sotomayor because party members have long decried judicial filibusters, The Hill reports (The Hill, 6/14).

Patients Deserve Investment In Future Doctors, Says British Medical Association Northern Ireland

Medical students and teaching staff have welcomed the Review & Modernisation of Supplement for Undergraduate Medical and Dental Education (SUMDE) consultation, which was undertaken by the DHSSPS. In its response, the BMA(NI) agreed with the general principle that "SUMDE funding must be distributed in an accountable, equitable and transparent manner". Damian Fogarty, Chairman of the BMA Medical Academic Staff Committee said, "As teachers of tomorrows" doctors, we are committed to delivering training of the highest standards. We have highlighted the need for an increase in medically qualified academic staff in line with the increase of student numbers, and hope that improved transparency in the distribution of funding will help achieve this. "However we strongly believe that this has to be a well defined and clear partnership between the health service and the University sector using staff that reflect that partnership and have the requisite protected time to educate our next generation of doctors. Our patients deserve this investment in their future doctors". Medical Student Committee Chairman Martin McClatchey said, "In a recent BMA(NI) survey, over 95% of local students said that they wanted to remain and practice locally. Therefore money for training should follow the student to enable investment in teaching and facilities in hospitals throughout Northern Ireland.
